Meet Paul Mattos, NC & SC Mortgage Broker
I'm Paul Mattos, a mortgage broker with Refine Mortgage, licensed in North Carolina and South Carolina (NMLS# 2339069). I've spent my career on nearly every side of a real estate transaction — as a Realtor, an on-site new-construction sales agent, and now a loan officer. Today, I use that experience to help homebuyers understand their financing, compare mortgage options, and build a strategy around the home they're actually trying to buy.
How I got here
I'm a North Carolina native — born here, raised in Matthews and Charlotte, and a graduate of Providence High School and Western Carolina University. My career started in real estate, first working as a Realtor and then spending several years as an on-site sales agent for home builders, helping buyers navigate new construction from contract to closing.
Over and over, I watched the same thing happen: a great agent and a great buyer would get most of the way to a house, and then the financing piece would be the part nobody had explained clearly. That's what pulled me into mortgage. I realized the financing side was often the part of the process people understood the least — even though it can affect nearly every part of the purchase. So I made it my focus.
I like helping people, and I like making sure the process actually goes smoothly. After years of seeing transactions from the real estate side and the builder side, I bring that full picture to every client I work with now.
How I work with clients
I try to explain things the way I wish someone had explained them to me — in plain language, with real numbers, often on video. If you're comparing loan options, I'll walk you through what each one actually costs and how they stack up side by side, rather than just handing you a rate and a payment number and hoping it makes sense.
I’m with Refine Mortgage because the broker model gives me the flexibility to compare options across multiple wholesale lenders instead of trying to fit every borrower into one box. I also have a team and resources behind me, while still being able to stay personally involved in the strategy and communication.
Who I love working with
I work with all kinds of buyers throughout North Carolina and South Carolina, but a few groups stand out. First-time homebuyers are some of my favorite clients — there’s nothing like watching someone learn the process and get the keys to their first place. I also enjoy working with move-up buyers, people relocating to the Charlotte area, real estate investors, and new-construction buyers. And I have a particular soft spot for self-employed borrowers, because their income usually takes more explaining and more creativity to structure correctly — and getting it right matters.
Outside the office
I’m a husband and father, and when I’m not working with clients I’m usually spending time with my family here in the Charlotte area. I grew up in Matthews, graduated from Providence High School, and after working throughout the Carolinas, this is still the place I call home. That local background is a big part of why I enjoy helping people who are moving to Charlotte and trying to figure out not just the mortgage, but the area they're about to call home.
